In Schelderode, in Molenstraat, stands the youngest fully operational post mill in East Flanders; called the “Witte Wachter.” It was built in 1907 and is located on the site of a wooden stake mill from the 17th century. The stone mill was built by the Van Hecke-Van Cauwenberghe family. It stands 17 meters high and is proudly situated on top of a 3-meter-high mill hill. The municipality of Merelbeke bought the mill from widow Van Cauwenberghe-Pede in 1989. In 1991, the mill and its surroundings were protected, and four years later, it was restored and made operational again. Since 1996, it has been fully functional using wind energy. The photo was taken around 1950. At Molenstraat 110 is the former home of the last miller, previously a café with the inscription “Café molenhuis.”
