Lower Heembeek

Neder-Heembeek is a town in the north of Brussels, Belgium. Over-Heembeek forms the town of Neder-Over-Heembeek, located west of the Brussels-Scheldt Maritime Canal.
Heembeek near the Senne is one of the oldest mentioned places in Brussels. Two places of worship were created. Neder-Heembeek was located in the north, downstream on the Heembeek, Over-Heembeek in the south, upstream. In the 12th century, both parishes came under the patronage of the abbey of Dielegem. Administratively, they also formed two lordships. In the 16th century, Neder-Heembeek was destroyed during religious wars. At the beginning of the 17th century, the laboratory of the alchemist and natural philosopher Jan Van Helmont was located there. In the 18th century, a vast estate was built near the village with a castle, gardens and orangery. It was given the name Meudon, referring to the Château de Meudon in France. The Ferraris map from the 1770s shows Neder-Heembeek with the Meudon estate. In 1814 the parishes were merged, after the creation of the municipality of Neder-Over-Heembeek in 1813, which remained independent until it was annexed to Brussels in 1921.
