The name Chantemelle is said to be derived from chante (song) and merle (blackbird), so one might say blackbird song. The village already existed in Gallo-Roman times: evidence of this is shown by the unearthing of a graveyard from that period. The castle that once stood there was destroyed by an unfriendly neighbor: the lord of Vance. The approximately 300 inhabitants of Chantemelle are called sarrasins, because they baked thick, tasty pancakes from buckwheat flour (sarrasin). But you won't find those there anymore. Additionally, Chantemelle is located in the Land of Gaum, in the deep south of the province of Luxembourg, 5 km southeast of Étalle and a straight-line 12 km southwest of Arlon.
