Okegem is a village in the Flemish province of East Flanders and a part of the municipality of Ninove. It has an area of 2.77 km² and is located in the Dender region on the left bank of the Dender, which forms the border with the province Vlaams-Brabant.De first mention of the name Ockinghem dates from the year 1096 and appears in a charter of the Geraardsberg St. Adrian's Abbey. The name is of Frankish origin. The ending -gem or heim refers to a farm or residence. Thus, the name has the meaning of "residence of Oko or Oking". The Okegem local history circle has been publishing about the history of Okegem since 1975.
