Asse was, along with Elewijt, Binche, and Blicquy, one of the four main places of the Nervii. The Nervii were a Belgian tribe that lived in northern France and southern Belgium at the time of the conquest by Julius Caesar, between the Scheldt and Sambre. The tribe controlled an important sector of the major trade route from Cologne to Amiens (the Chaussée Brunehaut).
