Steenhuffel

Steenhuffel is a village in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. Just like Malderen, it is a part of Londerzeel. Steenhuffel was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977.Steenhuffel is probably located on the old road of Asse via Hellegat and Niel. Steenhuffel grew from a small Roman settlement consisting of a few houses to a full-fledged seigneury with its own jurisdiction during the Middle Ages. The earliest mention of Steenhuffel dates back to 1112 and was written as 'Stenhufle'. Steenhuffel is said to have been expanded in the 12th century and to fall under the administration of the then lords of Robbroek. In 1144 the knightly family of Robbroek was mentioned as lords of Steenhuffel. During the Grimberg War in 1139 to 1159, the House of Robbroek would support the Berthouts in their grip on the Duchy of Brabant and they would also annex Merchtem and Ursene into the Duchy. The knightly family would hold court in or around the current Hemelrijkhof or Robbroekhof. There they would retain the administration of Steenhuffel until the end of the 13th century.
