Escornaix in French, in Dutch Schorisse, is a section of the Belgian municipality of Markedal located in the Flemish Region in the province of East Flanders. Several hypotheses exist for the origin of the toponym Schorisse. One hypothesis is that the heavy clayey subsoil named schorregrond gave rise to the toponym. Another hypothesis is that the name comes from the Scories, a tribe that occupied Cocambre, a locality in Escornaix, during the Roman occupation. This locality was located on the Roman road that connected the regions of the Southwest and Northwest. The earliest documents mention Scorndry in 1119, "Scornace in 1110 and 1131, Scornai in 1142, Scarnice in 1143, and Scornacum in 1148.
