The very rural Lissewege has belonged to Bruges since the municipal mergers. The name of the village first appears in the 11th century and might originate from 'liswega', the Celtic term for 'house of Liso'. This polder village is especially notable today for its white-painted houses in the village center and, of course, for the shape of the tower of the Church of Our Lady. The original church was built in 1275, but after it was set on fire by the Geuzen in 1568, it was restored in several phases during the 17th century.
