Rumbeke produced one of the top players in the music world. Adriaen Willaert was born here around 1490. A few decades later, he would become Kapellmeister of St. Mark's Basilica for thirty-five years. A kapellmeister is someone who is in charge of performing music. Flanders was then at the top when it came to producing music. Adriaen Willaert is considered the central figure of the Venetian school and pioneer of the Italian madrigal. A madrigal is a secular predominantly vocal form of music, originating in northern Italy in the 14th century.
