Old mentions of the place go back to 1170 and 1213 as Calkine. Later one finds the forms Kalkine, Calckene, Kalkene, Calcken and from 1937 finally Kalken. According to Maurits Gysseling, the name Kalken has its origin in the word Kalekinion, which means settlement in the bend of a river, or meander. That river in this case is the Scheldt.
