The name 'Flemish Ardennes' originates from the mind of Omer Wattez, author and enthusiast of his region. This Regional Landscape encompasses the district of Oudenaarde and the city of Zottegem, a total of eleven municipalities.
The Regional Landscape Flemish Ardennes is committed to protecting the natural assets of the region. Projects are set up around agriculture, education, recreation, and employment, with nature and landscape at the center.
This region features a very wide and varied range of interesting landscapes, including old meanders of the Scheldt River, ponds, spring forests, and marsh forests, witness hills, mixed deciduous forests, and open pastures. In addition to natural areas and other beautiful landscapes, the Flemish Ardennes can also boast a number of plants that do not occur anywhere else in Flanders: dark stork's bill, purple loosestrife, and spotted lungwort. Several animal species still occur in the region but almost nowhere else in Flanders: the great yellow wagtail, the fire salamander, and the spring dragonfly.
