Once the Americans of the 91st Division left behind the Spitaalbossen and Wortegem, they reached their last stop before Oudenaarde: Moregem. Here too, fierce fighting broke out with the Germans on their retreat on October 31, 1918.
An American who was deployed in this area was Samuel Davis. In 1917, he requested exemption from military service, as he claimed to be "physically unfit." It was to no avail. Despite his request for exemption, Davis must have been an excellent soldier. Without any military background, he quickly rose to the rank of sergeant. Samuel Davis lost his life to artillery fire near the 'Iron Bar' in Moregem. He was first buried in Bevere and later transferred to Waregem. Today, his final resting place can be found at the Flanders Field American Cemetery. Coordinates: Plot C – Row 04 – Grave 18.
The village of Moregem also suffered severely during the Battle of the Scheldt. The church, the organ, and a number of valuable wooden statues were destroyed. In the town hall, many valuable old archives of the municipality and the shooters’ guild went up in smoke.
