Houtvenne is a village in the Belgian province of Antwerp and a part of the municipality of Hulshout. Houtvenne was an independent municipality until the municipal reform of 1977. Houtvenne likely originated under the Carolingians. Many local residents refer to this region as Josterwijk. Oosterwijk-Houtvenne grew around a chapel dedicated to St. Adrian within the parish of Herselt, which has been under the management of the Abbey of Tongerlo since 1365. In 1651, Oosterwijk-Houtvenne became nearly an autonomous parish, still under the control of that same abbey. In the 19th century, the chapel was transformed into a church.
