Achel is known for the Achelse Kluis, a Trappist monastery that is partly on Dutch territory. This monastery brews its own beer, the Trappist beer called Achel.De first written mention of Achel is from 1139, when the name was written as Achile. Aghel and Aeghelen are more recent names. The name is composed of the words aha and lo. Aha means water, referring to the Warmbeek. A lo is a forest on sandy ground and usually located near a settlement. Achel means "The grove near the water located on sandy soil".
