Achel es conocido por la Achelse Kluis, un monasterio trapense que se encuentra en parte en territorio neerlandés. Este monasterio elabora su propia cerveza, la cerveza trapense llamada Achel. La primera mención escrita de Achel data de 1139, cuando el nombre se escribía como Achile. Aghel y Aeghelen son nombres más recientes. El nombre se compone de las palabras aha y lo. Aha significa agua, refiriéndose al Warmbeek. Un lo es un bosque en terreno arenoso y generalmente estaba situado cerca de un asentamiento. Por lo tanto, Achel significa "El bosquecillo en terreno arenoso junto al agua".
