Freddy Maertens was born in Lombardsijde in 1952 and was one of the best Belgian cyclists in the 1970s and 1980s. He won the green jersey in the Tour de France three times (1976, 1978, and 1981), was the overall winner of the Vuelta (1977), and became world champion on the road twice (1976 and 1981). In 1976, he also became Belgian champion.
In 2004, the cyclist was declared an honorary citizen of Middelkerke. On this occasion, a bust of him was unveiled, designed by the Ostend artist Josyane Vanhoutte.
Part of the training course that prepared the cyclist for his many victories can today also be cycled by you; it is a route of 42 kilometers, the Freddy Maertens route.
