At the end of the 19th century, this concrete water collection and purification basin was built to provide the seaside resort with fresh drinking water during the summer months. The water was to be sourced from the New Port-Plassendale canal. However, this would never come to pass, as nature intervened before it could be used. An increase in the groundwater table caused one side of the building to be pushed upward. The result is that the building emerged from the ground at an angle of 12°. All attempts to sink the basin back into the ground failed. Ultimately, it was decided not to demolish the water basin because it was too costly. Unexpectedly, the well grew into a tourist attraction. It was named for the drunken feeling one experiences when descending the steps into the well. The tilted structure and the water surface have an unexpected effect on one’s sense of balance. As early as 1918, the Drunken Well appeared on postcards, and in 2002, it was protected as a monument. Even today, it remains a popular stop, although it is recommended to book a reservation by phone in advance (+32 (0)59/303013).
