Villas in Cogels

So-called "VILLA COGELS". Protected as a monument by royal decree of 21.02.1978. Naming after the client, the Antwerp baron Cogels, according to the inscription in the façade frame; from circa 1900, signed "THE GROOFF ARCH" on the pedestal. Demolition in the late 1970s while preserving the façade; realization of an apartment building of eleven floors. Originally symmetrically conceived single house of three bays; basement and three and a half storeys under flat roof. Eclectic parement of bluestone; Base-forming ground floor with bush imitation. Art Nouveau-tinted decorative elements include bindings and casements with ceramic tiles with floral whipping motif, and iron balcony railings. Risalite-forming narrow left and right bay and wide middle travee. Left bay: round arch door with two-tiered pointed skylight - accessible via stairs -, above it over-angled bay window with onion roof crown (zinc cover), crowning parapet with shell motif and pillar-shaped top piece. Similarly conceived right bay, but with door to the basement and omission of the bay window. Middle travee openwork by means of loggias with uneven basket and round arch openings. Horizontal façade articulation by means of cordon mouldings, the mezzanine with two and three lights (with columns) and cornice on bobbins with crowning carrot. Rectangular wall openings; renewed woodwork.
