The Warandeduinen
This nature reserve covers a large area of the remaining dunes behind the buildings on the Zeedijk between Westende and Middelkerke. It includes several dune pans, one of which contains a dune pond. This body of water is home to a unique fauna and flora. Around this so-called 'Salamander pit', where salamanders and frogs can be found, there is also an ideal breeding ground for small songbirds. In this area, the blue sea thistle, the rare chalk bedstraw, and the even rarer lying asparagus grow. In spring, hundreds of orchids bloom. Furthermore, one can find the heath butterfly and the brown blue, two endangered butterfly species, as well as a population of acorn mice that Natuurpunt is desperately trying to save from extinction. Visitors to this reserve are therefore asked to stay on the paved paths that traverse the area.
