This nature reserve of 25 ha is maintained by Natuurpunt. They regularly organize walks, but in addition, certain paths make the area freely accessible.
The dunes in the Schuddebeurze are so old that the lime that was once present has completely leached out. This has created a previously acidic environment, resulting in a special and unique species composition: heath with gorse and subterranean clover as eye-catchers.
Parts of the area are therefore rightly protected as a landscape. In the dunes, a freshwater stream, the Schuddebeurzebeek, originates, draining the area.
Bomb impacts from mainly WWI give the area a microrelief, in which several bunkers, trenches, and ammunition depots were also built during WWII.
The Schuddebeurzeweg, along which this nature reserve is located, is the oldest recorded country road in the area (as early as 1244), the Burgweg. This connected Bruges with Leffinge and Westende, among others.
