The famous writer Louis Paul Boon, born in 1912, wrote, among other things, the masterpiece De Kappelekensbaan (The Chapel Track). The story takes place in the grey factory town of Aalst in the 19th century, in which the Kappelekensbaan plays a central role as a location. The ambitious middle-class girl Ondine tries in all kinds of ways to escape from this city, but she doesn't succeed. When four villas were built along the Kapellekensbaan, Ondineke used her charms to secure the contract for the carpentry business for her father. However, the Bosmans family is foolish enough to spend all the money right away, which means they can't pay the wood supplier. Ondineke goes to the Schatt family, owners of the fourth villa who have not yet paid their bills, and meets Oscarke Schatt. She will eventually marry this simple soul...
The Kapellekensbaan and the Termurenlaan actually form one street that is cut in half by the railway ("the iron road"). The Chapel of Our Lady of the Walls was probably built in the fifteenth century and re-erected in 1763. It is there that Ondineke stole money from the sacrificial block. The castle, the forest and café De Jager are also based on reality.
