Like many cities, Oudenaarde was also surrounded by water and ramparts. The fortifications were already established under Spanish rule but were expanded by the architect of Louis XIV, Vauban. These ramparts with surrounding agricultural land were purchased by Mr. Liedts, governor of Brabant and Hainaut. He commissioned the creation of a large private garden, inspired by English garden design.
The 6 ha large park is open to the public, serves as the green lung of the city, and is freely accessible from sunrise to sunset.
