Comme beaucoup de villes, Oudenaarde était également entourée d'eau et de remparts. Les fortifications avaient déjà été mises en place sous le régime espagnol mais ont été étendues par l'architecte de Louis XIV, Vauban. Ces remparts et les terres agricoles environnantes ont été achetés par M. Liedts, gouverneur de Brabant et du Hainaut. Il donna l'ordre d'aménager un grand jardin privé, inspiré de l'art des jardins anglais.
Le parc de 6 ha est ouvert au public, constitue le poumon vert de la ville et est accessible gratuitement de l'aube au crépuscule.
