At the top of the town hall has stood Hanske de Krijger since 1538, the main character from a city legend. According to that legend, Hanske, a city guard, had drunk too much and had fallen asleep when Emperor Charles came to visit. So that he would be noticed next time, Emperor Charles supposedly obliged the city to henceforth feature glasses in the coat of arms. In reality, however, the Oudenaarde 'glasses' are not glasses at all, but the Gothic letter 'A' from 'Audenaerde'.
