The line is a nature reserve managed by the nature association vzw Durme. The name of the area is derived from the bedmarlinie, which was constructed here at the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession. The liniewegel owes its name to this former defensive line.
Between Mendonk and Stekene lies the Moervaart depression. This was once the largest limestone marsh in Flanders. The lower-lying area is approximately 15 km long and 3.5 km wide. Due to the wet and difficult-to-access ground, it was ideal for use as a natural defense.
