The medieval town of Pamele emerged in the 13th century, when the local lords settled on the right bank of the Scheldt. The OLV church of Pamele (1234-1310) is a beautiful example of Scheldt Gothic and was much richer than the Walburga church of Oudenaarde. Here, Margaretha of Parma was baptized, the governor of the Netherlands from 1559 to 1567. She was the illegitimate daughter that Emperor Charles fathered in 1522 with the maid of his then-host, the governor of Oudenaarde. At the end of the 16th century, Pamele merged with Oudenaarde into one city.
