Due to their political action, the Daensists had to endure serious persecution, ridicule, and slander campaigns. Boon describes how, in 1897, an incident occurred at a party of the Catholic trumpeters' club in Herdersem, where the Catholic thugs attacked the Daensists. Even an old woman, who expressed her outrage over the disgraceful behavior of the Catholics, was reportedly beaten black and blue by the thugs, according to Boon. A few months after the events, the Catholic trumpeters filed a complaint against Pieter Daens for the 'slanderous articles' he allegedly wrote about the events in his publications. The Dendermonde court found him guilty and punished him with a hefty damages award.
