From the 12th century, the importance of Rupelmonde grew due to the construction of a majestic water castle (destroyed in 1678) that was meant to defend the Scheldt and the Rupel. On that site, the current Graventoren was built in 1817. Many places in Rupelmonde refer to Gerardus Mercator, who was born there in 1512. In Rupelmonde (and in the rest of the municipality of Kruibeke), you can also encounter Reynaert the Fox. On the quay stands the 'Zwarte Madame' who exhibits all the characteristics that can also be attributed to the Scheldt.
