Weerdemolen toll tower.
The watermill was built on the border where the tidal effect of the North Sea is still visible. A toll tower was built along a second drainage line where the ships to and from Brussels had to pay tolls to be pulled to their destination. See the Image Bank photo from around 1780: http://www.beeldbankmechelen.be/index2.php?option=com_memorix&Itemid=53&task=topview&rpp=20&cp=2&pp=1&ft=&ff=&mrxpopup=1&CollectionID=28&PhotoID=AZE001000395&RecordID=436&ResultRecord=33
The Weerdemolen was located on the left bank of the still existing toll tower ruin, in a drainage that was filled in after WWI. See this photo for a view upstream to the toll tower from Weerde: http://www.beeldbankmechelen.be/index2.php?option=com_memorix&Itemid=53&task=topview&rpp=20&cp=2&pp=1&ft=&ff=&mrxpopup=1&CollectionID=28&PhotoID=AZE001000397&RecordID=438&ResultRecord=35
The Weerdemolen was important in the 1st World War as a lookout and bulwark, as a result of which it was completely destroyed. Today, only part of the toll tower remains.
