Den Spauwer is an old wall fountain in Brussels. It is located near the Grand Place, at the corner of Steenstraat and Kolenmarkt. The fountain is integrated into a chamfered corner house from 1823, but is itself older, probably dating back to the 14th century. The blue fountain, as it was called then, had multiple basins and jets. It was managed by the municipal fountain master and was located opposite the house t'Platbroot, which was rented by the city in 1427. This house, next to the cloth hall, at the rear of the town hall, was later converted into the Boterpot. An inventory from 1622 still places the fountain in the gang leading to the Boterpot, but not for long. The destruction in 1695 proved fatal for the blue fountain. The city council allowed Josse Van Schoonendonck to rebuild the ruins on the condition that he would provide a new fountain. An 18th-century map indicates that the water from his fountain spouted from a lion's mask.
