During World War I, the castle of Elverdinge was used as headquarters for various units. On January 13, 1918, a fire broke out in the castle, most likely the result of inattention on the part of the British cooks. The castle was rebuilt in 1925 under the direction of architect Jules Coomans from Ypres. The outer walls could be preserved and retained. The old 18th-century castle was thus rebuilt to its original appearance on the pre-war site.
