The Tommenmolen is a grain water mill. This name dates back to
already from around 1400 when the mill came into the possession of the
family Van der Tommen. In 1573, the now dilapidated
mill for more than two centuries in the possession of Grimbergen Abbey until it was sold publicly by the French Revolutionaries in 1807. The current building dates from the 16th century but was thoroughly renovated in the 19th century. It remained in use until the 50s and was purchased by the municipality of Grimbergen in 1967. The mill now houses the Museum of Older Techniques. In the mud barn next to the mill, the secrets of rice cultivation in ancient Japan are revealed. The original barn was destroyed by fire. The current barn, which was originally located a few hundred meters from the mill, was only built here in 1980.
