In 1962, writer Maurice Roelants had his own house designed by the progressive architect Willy Van Der Meeren. The house is isolated on the Tomberg, in the middle of an agricultural landscape, south of the Chaussée de Ninove. Maurice Roelants, novelist, poet and critic, was successively a teacher, civil servant, journalist and curator of Gaasbeek Castle. Roelants is best known as a novel innovator. With his novel "Komen en gaan" (1927) and the novella "The Jazz Player" (1928) he laid the foundation for the psychological novel in Flanders. He has also played an influential role as a cultural animator avant-la-lettre, as a magazine editor and as a promoter of the book industry and Dutch-speaking cultural life in Brussels.
