According to legend, Mietje stroel was a foundling who had fallen from a boat on the inland waterways near Zelzate. She was found by a smuggler and raised in the Smugglers' Forest. She was known as "the girl of the smuggler's forest that peed where it fit her". "Stroelen" means "rushing flows".
