The Agency for Nature and Forests (Flemish government) manages about 400 hectares of the forest, other parts are still under private management. A large part, the Maldegemveld, is managed by Natuurpunt. The Drongengoedbos is known for its wide variety of mushrooms and moths. But the variety of deciduous and coniferous forest interspersed with wet grasslands and heathland also appeals to many plant and animal species. The many avenues and rows of trees are important 'ecological highways' along which plants and animals can migrate smoothly. It is therefore not surprising that the Drongengoed-Maldegemveld, including the airport, is protected by Europe.
