The Boerenkrijg was a South Dutch peasant uprising from 1798, aimed against the French occupation. During the boerenkrijg, the current wall belt did not yet exist. At this location, the peasants could spectacularly escape the city and make fools of the French. That is why the small square you see is also called the boerenkrijg pleintje. The petrol gate dates from 1837 and is part of the wall belt. The two rooms in front of this gate were the powder magazines that served as storage for the gunpowder that always had to remain dry.
