The feudal castle of La Roche-en-Ardenne was built between the 11th and 14th centuries on a site that had already been inhabited early on. This was demonstrated in the 20th century through excavations of prehistoric and Roman artifacts. From the 12th century, the castle played an important role in the defense of the city and the development of trade, becoming a stopping point on the trade route of English wool to Lombardy.
