The oldest fossils of the Ginkgo date back to the Permian period. It is generally believed that the genus Ginkgo originated from the Seed ferns. The closest relatives to Ginkgo are the Palm ferns. This Japanese nut tree has hardly changed since the Mesozoic. The leaves are also remarkable. Not only is the shape very distinctive, but if you look at the veins, you will also see something peculiar. They run parallel to each other.
