Saint Rochu's Chapel

Recently restored chapel flanked by an old nave dedicated to Saint Roch. The year above the door is misleading because the chapel dates from the 19th century. Possibly the year refers to an earlier chapel.

Saint Roch is one of the plague saints. According to legend, he was a pilgrim who stopped everywhere during his travels to care for plague sufferers and other sick people. When he himself became ill, he retreated to a forest for fear of infecting others. He was discovered there by a neighboring nobleman, because his dog always ran off with a lump of bread. Upon further investigation, it turned out that the animal provided Rochus with food in this way.

He is invoked against the plague, cholera and other epidemics. He is also the patron saint of Venice. He is depicted as a pilgrim (pilgrim's cloak, hat) and almost always with a plague bump on his thigh. Usually he is accompanied by a dog.
