Saint Peter's Band Church Uitbergen

The Saint Peter's Chains Church dates back to the 12th century but was extensively renovated in the early 20th century. The tower of the church and the choir are the only remnants of the old church. In 1904, it was decided to enlarge the church and adapt it to the wildly popular neo-Gothic style (11). The interior was also renewed. There are 4 statues preserved from the old church. They are polychrome statues, placed around the altar, that are believed to date from the 17th to early 18th century. The statue of Saint Anthony the Abbot, invariably depicted with his piglet, is said to have been fished out of the Scheldt 200 years ago. How the statue ended up there is a mystery. The event sparked a wave of devotion for the saint. Since then, Saint Anthony's fair has been organized in Uitbergen on January 17th.

Neo-Gothic (11)
An extremely popular architectural style for churches in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is inspired by medieval Gothic architecture, characterized by vertical lines and pointed arches, and was seen as the true Christian style. The building is conceived as a total work of art where architecture, interior, and furniture form a cohesive whole. The orientation of the church, as well as many decorative elements, are imbued with ancient symbolism. Many neo-Gothic churches were vividly painted on the inside. Unfortunately, these colorful interiors are often covered today with a layer of white plaster.
