The Grote Markt shows you the prosperity of the medieval trading city of Dendermonde with prestigious secular buildings such as the Town Hall and the Vleeshuis Museum, respectively the former cloth and meat hall.
Works by the Dendermonde painters are exhibited in the town hall. More information about the oldest history of this city can be found in the Vleeshuis Museum.

Next to the Grote Markt is the imposing Court of Justice. Until the second half of the 16th century, this was the location of the castle of the lords of Dendermonde. After that, a Carmelite monastery was established until it was abolished by the French rulers in 1794.
