11 July 1934: Decision to form three "Mixed Groups" consisting of a battalion of Chasseurs Ardennais militiamen and a battalion of volunteer border cyclists. ]Garrisons planned: Vielsalm, Bastogne and Arlon. Two barracks to be built, one in Bastogne and the other in Vielsalm. While the Chasseurs Ardennais consisted from the outset of a majority of Walloons mainly originating from the Ardennes, a substantial number of soldiers from other regions were also present when the regiment was formed, including Flemish soldiers from the 10th Line Infantry regiment. The Chasseurs Ardennais were equipped with light tanks, self-propelled guns and tracked transporters. [The reasons for their resistance are related to their equipment as much as their courage. Their motto: « Résiste et Mords » (Resist and Bite), their colours: Red and Green, their march: The March of the Chasseurs Ardennais.
The 3rd Chasseurs Ardennais were garrisoned in Vielsalmfrom 1934 to 1940 and from 1952 to 1994.
The town erected this monument in honour of the regiment. It was inaugurated by Minister André Flahaut on 14 September 2002.
