The parish church of Saint-Martin d'Ath in Belgium in the province of Hainaut is located in the heart of the city near the Grand Place in the rue Saint-Martin. The earlier church was located on the village of Brantignies near the town of Ath. Its date of construction is not known, but the church of Brantignies is dated between the end of the twelfth and the beginning of the thirteenth century in a Romanesque style. The village was outside the walls when the city was founded: the church was therefore very exposed during the wars. It was first burned by the garrison of Tournai in 1477. Afterwards, it was rebuilt to be destroyed again by the Huguenots in 1578 during the Wars of Religion or to build a new enclosure.
