Ath is located on the Dender. The city was fortified several times, including by Charles V and Vauban. Sights include Burban Castle, St. Julien's Church, St. Martin's Church and the Town Hall. It was in Ath that peace was reached on 4 June 1357 between the Flemish Count Louis of Male and his wife Margaret of Male with the Luxembourg Duke Wenceslas. As a result, the War of the Brabant Succession came to an end and Flanders acquired Mechelen and Antwerp.
