The existence of a parish church is noted in 1026 when the patronage rights of the church were granted to the Abbey of Saint Bertin in Saint-Omer. At that time, it was a late Romanesque cruciform church. Around 1445, a renovation in Gothic style took place. In the second half of the 16th century, the church was damaged during the religious wars. Around 1620, the restored church was consecrated. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was a pseudo-basilica with a Romanesque crossing tower. In 1844, the nave was demolished and replaced with a much larger Neo-Gothic nave. A new choir, oriented towards the west, was also constructed. The original choir was converted into an entrance portal. The octagonal bell chamber of the tower was rebuilt in 1873 in pseudo-Romanesque style according to a design by Pierre Buyck, and was reconstructed in natural stone in a more original style in 1930, designed by Maurice Allaert. In 1937, the Romanesque parts of the church, particularly the transept, the lower part of the tower, and the remnants of the original choir, were protected. Later, the bell chamber and the spire of the tower followed.
