The Merkemveld domain derives its name from the family of Outryve de Merckem, who had this former heathland forested around the end of the 18th century. In the middle of the forest, the Baesveld castle was built. The beautiful castle park was partially subdivided for weekend residences after WWII. Since 1948, there has also been a youth center for Scouts and Guides Flanders vzw established, and recently there is also a play area.
The Doeveren area adjoins Merkemveld and mostly consists of forests alongside meadows and fields.
