In 1855 there was a straw chapel in Houthulst. It was built on the initiative of the Cassiers family. In 1857 Houthulst became a parish. A year later, the construction of the church began. After WWI, the church was completely destroyed, after which it was rebuilt in 1921-'22, in neo-Romanesque style, but now in a different place as a result of the building plan. The architect of the church was the same as the architect of the town hall, Joseph Viérin. He made a large single-nave space of 41 by 11 meters and a transept in which 2 side altars have place.
