Wijtschatestraat - 8950 Wijtschate
Intersection of Wijtschatestraat and Oosthoekstraat
The two pillars should show the heroic efforts of two Irish divisions during the great mine battle on 7 June 1917.
They are the Protestant 36th Ulster Division and the Catholic 16th Irish Division. It was the last time in history that Catholic and Protestant Irish fought together. That is why this place has a particularly symbolic value for the Irish.
With the installation of the two columns, the municipality of Heuvelland wanted to remind the general public of this location, which is now only known by specialists. The columns establish a link with the Irish Peace Tower in Messines. In terms of shape, they fit well with the columns, which are located near the Irish tower.
