The Place of the Executed is a memorial site on the Offerlaan in Ghent, between Martelaarslaan and the Leie, commemorating the German executions in Ghent during World War I in which 52 people lost their lives here. Most of the condemned were resistance fighters. A monument with the inscription "place of execution for those shot in the head 1914-1918" hangs at the entrance gate. The gate also bears the inscription DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI, a quote from the Roman poet Horace. The domain features 52 hawthorns, each with a memorial plaque bearing the names of the victims.
