In a flat area, water seeks the path of least resistance, causing a waterway to wind or meander. This winding course creates differences in flow speed and depth within the waterway. In and around the alternately concave and convex banks, a unique and highly varied fauna and flora develop. By straightening and reinforcing the banks, humans have not only affected the structural characteristics of streams and rivers, but also deprived many aquatic inhabitants of a place to breed, find food, or seek shelter. In current water policy, the government is trying to redesign the banks to be more environmentally friendly and, where possible, restore meandering.
